Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Nasarawa State have taken into custody a 62-year-old man believed to be involved in the distribution of counterfeit currency within the state.
This development was communicated in a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Rahman Nansel, and made available to our correspondent in Lafia, the state capital.
According to SP Nansel, the suspect, identified as Mamuda Hassan and a resident of Anchor Zaria in Kaduna State, was apprehended by officers from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Lafia, following credible intelligence.
SP Nansel further clarified that initial investigations suggest the suspect was apprehended at the Lafia cattle market while allegedly attempting to trade in fake N1,000 denomination banknotes.
The statement detailed that, “During interrogation, the suspect confessed that the counterfeit notes were supplied to him by an accomplice residing in Mararaba Akunza, Lafia. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the said accomplice, who is currently at large.”
SP Nansel emphasized that the state Commissioner of Police, Shetima Mohammed, has advised the public to remain alert in their day-to-day financial transactions.
He urged business owners, including small traders, filling station attendants, Point of Sale (POS) operators, and motor park staff, to be vigilant and look out for indicators of counterfeit currency.
These indicators, he noted, typically include inferior print quality, reduced note size, duplicate serial numbers, and the absence of authentic security features.
He quoted the CP as calling on all residents to promptly report any individual found with or attempting to circulate suspected fake currency to the nearest police station.
He added that the suspect will face legal charges upon the completion of the investigation to serve as a deterrent to others engaging in such illicit activities.
