Peter Obi, the standard-bearer for the Nigeria Democratic Congress in the upcoming presidential race, has asserted that the West African nation is deteriorating rapidly under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu. Obi delivered this critique on Saturday while addressing attendees at a political town hall gathering held in Imo State.
During his address, the former governor of Anambra State expressed deep concern over the normalisation of violent crime and the misappropriation of state resources. He argued that the current federal administration has failed in its primary constitutional duty to protect citizens, leaving the populace in a constant state of apprehension.
Obi assured supporters that an administration led by him would prioritise the neutralisation of security threats and put an end to official graft.
What specific criticisms did Obi level against the administration?
Elaborating on his assessment, Obi claimed that governance parameters across the board are failing, pointing to rising terror metrics and diminished leadership capacity. "Everything under President Tinubu is collapsing. We have become more terrorised, and Nigeria is now number four. Tinubu no longer has the energy to govern. The greatest problem of this country is people stealing public money, and that cannot happen under my watch," he remarked.
How does the opposition figure plan to address these challenges?
Outline potential solutions, Obi suggested that a coalition involving himself and key political allies would bridge national divides and implement drastic measures to restore order. “If given the opportunity, Kwankwaso and I will unite this country and declare a state of emergency on insecurity,” he added.
Concluding his remarks, Obi maintained that the country requires a visionary leader committed to safeguarding lives and directing national resources toward collective development rather than enriching a privileged minority.
