Troops of the Nigerian Army have located and recovered the remains of two soldiers who were tragically killed in April 2022 while travelling to Imo State for their traditional wedding. The confirmation came from security analyst Zagazola.
The deceased couple, identified as Master Warrant Officer (rtd) Linus Musa Audu and Lance Corporal Gloria Mathew, were reportedly abducted and subsequently murdered by individuals suspected to be IPOB/ESN members along the Ubaha–Orsu axis in Imo State.
The incident occurred as the couple embarked on a journey intended for their traditional wedding ceremony in Gloria’s hometown. This event was meant to be a celebration of their union and the joining of their families.
Linus Musa Audu, a retired senior non-commissioned officer, and Gloria Mathew, who was an active-duty Lance Corporal, hailed from different regions, with Gloria serving in Sokoto and Linus residing in Makurdi. Their journey to Imo was meant to culminate in a significant life event.
Tragically, their path was intercepted by suspected IPOB terrorists in the Ubaha–Orsu area, leading to their brutal murder.
Following nearly four years of diligent searching and intelligence gathering, elements of the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, in collaboration with other security agencies, conducted a targeted clearance and search operation on April 24, 2026. This operation focused on the very area where the soldiers' lives were tragically cut short, guided by recent intelligence.
During the operation, the troops encountered significant resistance from IPOB militants who attempted to impede their progress through ambushes and subsequent assaults. Despite facing heavy gunfire and multiple attacks, the soldiers persevered and successfully navigated through the confrontations, forcing the attackers to retreat.
With determination, the troops continued their mission, undertaking an extensive search of the suspected locations. Their efforts led to the discovery of shallow graves believed to contain the remains of the slain personnel.
The graves were meticulously excavated, and the remains were exhumed for forensic analysis. This process is crucial for positively identifying the deceased soldiers.
Sources within the military indicate that efforts are underway to liaise with the families of the fallen personnel for DNA verification. This is a necessary step to ensure accurate identification before final burial arrangements are made.
The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to providing the recovered personnel with a dignified burial, complete with full military honours. This solemn ceremony will serve as a final tribute to their dedicated service, profound sacrifice, and the shared future that was tragically denied to them.
