The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has refuted allegations regarding a jailbreak that supposedly occurred at the Benin Custodial Centre in Edo State.
In an announcement made on Tuesday, January 27, the Public Relations Officer of the NCoS, Chief Superintendent JIN Osuji, characterized the circulating reports—originating on January 24—as entirely untrue.
The circulated narrative claimed that three inmates, including two convicted fraudsters, had escaped from the facility on Friday, January 16, 2026.
The reports also suggested that the third claimed escapee was connected to the 2020 #EndSARS protests and had not yet received a final judgment.
Contrary to these assertions, Osuji's statement affirmed that no jailbreak, escape, or breach of security had occurred in the correctional centers within Benin City or any other part of Edo State.
"Thorough investigations and checks carried out by the Edo State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service confirm that all inmates are accounted for, and custodial operations across the State remain secure, stable, and effectively managed.
The Nigerian Correctional Service assures the public, particularly the residents of Benin City and Edo State, that all custodial facilities are secure, posing no risk to public safety derived from any correctional center. The Service continues to uphold its commitment to the safe custody, security, and rehabilitation of inmates," the statement highlighted.
