In response to a distress call, the Nigerian Navy has initiated a swift search and rescue operation, successfully recovering seven survivors from a boat accident that occurred on the Ogboinbiri waterways in Bayelsa State's Southern Ijaw Local Government Area. The incident involved a collision between a Tantita patrol boat and a wooden market boat.
Personnel from Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Soroh were promptly dispatched to the scene by naval authorities, leading to the rapid evacuation of the seven rescued individuals. They were subsequently transported to a medical facility for immediate attention and care. The Navy confirmed that efforts are continuing to find any other individuals who may still be missing as a result of the mishap.
This operation aligns with the directive of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, which emphasizes not only ensuring maritime security but also safeguarding lives within Nigerian territorial waters. The Navy highlighted its consistent performance in undertaking search and rescue missions across the nation's water bodies.
Recent interventions cited include the rescue of passengers during a piracy incident along the Ibaka–Calabar Channel and multiple responses to vessels in distress or on fire in Calabar's waters. These actions underscore the Navy's role as a responsive maritime entity dedicated to the welfare of the public and its commitment to international best practices in emergency response.
The Navy has assured the public of its continued readiness to deploy necessary assets and personnel for timely intervention in maritime emergencies.
