The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has announced that dust haze is anticipated to affect Nigeria for a three-day period, commencing on Saturday and extending through Monday.
According to NiMet's weather outlook, released in Abuja, the northern regions of the country can expect moderate dust haze with horizontal visibility ranging from two to five kilometres on Saturday. The agency also projected localised areas within Katsina, Kano, and Jigawa States to experience visibility of 1,000 metres or less throughout the forecast period.
Furthermore, the North-central part of Nigeria is forecast to experience moderate dust haze for the entire duration of the outlook.
In contrast, the southern regions are expected to have sunny skies with scattered cloud patches. There is a slight possibility of afternoon or evening thunderstorms accompanied by light rainfall in parts of Lagos, Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states.
Looking ahead to Sunday, NiMet predicts that the northern and North-central areas will continue to face moderate dust haze conditions for the entire day.
The southern region is again forecast to experience sunny conditions with some cloud cover. Light rainfall and isolated thunderstorms might occur in Ondo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, and Edo states later in the day.
For Monday, NiMet anticipates a slight dust haze over the northern region, while the North-central zone is expected to remain under dust haze conditions throughout the day.
In the southern parts of the country on Monday, sunny skies with a few cloud patches are expected. There are also slim chances of isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall over Lagos, Edo, Delta, and Bayelsa states later in the day.
The agency advised the public to take necessary precautions, noting that dust particles would remain suspended in the atmosphere. Individuals with asthma and other respiratory ailments are urged to be cautious given the prevailing weather conditions.
NiMet also recommended that motorists exercise caution when driving, particularly during rainfall. Airline operators have been advised to obtain specific airport weather reports from NiMet to ensure effective operational planning.
