Oklahoma Mother Receives Seven Life Sentences Over Daughter's Abuse and Unassisted Home Birth

An Oklahoma woman has received seven consecutive life sentences for failing to protect her 11-year-old daughter from sexual abuse by her husband, which led to the child giving birth at home without medical care. The husband and the victim's grandmother have also faced legal consequences in connection to the case.

Cherie Walker, a 34-year-old resident of Oklahoma, United States, was handed seven consecutive life sentences by a Muskogee County judge following her conviction for failing to shield her minor daughter from severe abuse and dangerous neglect. The sentencing concluded a legal process stemming from an incident where her 11-year-old daughter delivered a baby inside their residence without any professional medical attention or prenatal care.

What led to the conviction of Cherie Walker?

The case came to light in August 2025 when local law enforcement discovered that the 11-year-old victim had given birth at home on August 16, 2025. Following an investigation, authorities filed charges against Walker, which included one count of child sexual abuse and six counts of child neglect. Prosecutors successfully argued during the trial that Walker was fully aware of the ongoing abuse inflicted upon the child by her husband but deliberately chose not to intervene. A Muskogee County court ultimately found her guilty on all seven felony counts.

What did prosecutors and officials say about the case?

During the initial stages of the investigation, Muskogee County Assistant District Attorney Janet Hutson stated that both Cherie Walker and her husband, Dustin Walker, absurdly maintained that they were unaware of the pregnancy prior to the birth. “This child is traumatized,” Hutson noted in a previous interview, highlighting the severe ordeal the victim endured by undergoing an unassisted home birth. Subsequent DNA profiling conducted by the district attorney’s office confirmed that the victim's stepfather was the biological father of the newborn.

What happened to the other defendants in the case?

Other members of the household also faced criminal prosecution for their complicity in the tragedy. The child’s stepfather entered a guilty plea to felony child sexual abuse and neglect charges, subsequently receiving a life sentence. Additionally, the victim's grandmother, Michelle Justus, was criminally charged after investigators established that she had prior knowledge of the ongoing abuse within the home yet failed to take any action to protect the minor.
