OPay, a leading financial technology firm, has revealed its intention to establish a cybersecurity laboratory at the University of Calabar (UniCal).
This announcement was made during a visit by OPay representatives to the Vice Chancellor of UniCal, Offiong Offiong, in Calabar on Tuesday.
Itoro Udo, who led the OPay delegation, explained that the visit was part of fulfilling the company’s commitment to the university. "To demonstrate our dedication to this initiative, we have representatives from Hunter Flex Intercoms Construction Company, the firm tasked with executing the project, accompanying us today," Udo conveyed.
"OPay’s collaboration with UniCal started in 2023, and we are focused on reinforcing this relationship through meaningful and impactful initiatives," he added. Udo also mentioned that OPay would aid the university in hosting the Nigeria University Games in August 2026.
In his address, Vice Chancellor Offiong commended OPay’s plans, calling it a pivotal step towards enhancing the university's technological capabilities. He stated that the upcoming cybersecurity lab would significantly equip students with advanced digital skills and foster innovation.
He assured OPay of the university’s support to guarantee the successful implementation of this initiative.
"I sincerely appreciate OPay’s willingness to support the university during the forthcoming university games, and we are already preparing to ensure a successful event. The university aims to maintain the benefits gained from hosting these games by institutionalizing essential sports infrastructure," Offiong emphasized.
