Recent footage showing monkeys that reportedly suffered mistreatment during a live performance at a tourist attraction has provoked widespread anger in China.

The controversial show unfolded at the Longquan Ancient Town Drama Fantasy City, situated in Luquan District, Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, China.

In one segment of the video, a macaque, fitted with a metal muzzle and wearing a yellow vest, is seen kneeling on the ground. A man, speaking into a microphone to an audience filled with children, forced the animal into this position.

Subsequently, the individual covered the monkey's head with a black cloth and restrained its arms behind a plastic pipe.

He then picked up a toy gun and appeared to mimic shooting the monkey, causing it to collapse and remain motionless on the ground.

Additionally, another monkey was observed tethered by a long rope around its neck, while two other monkeys were seen secured in the background.

The disturbing scenes incited numerous complaints from viewers, who described the performance as distressing and accused the organizers of animal cruelty.

Employees at Longquan Ancient Town clarified to the media that the monkey act was handled by an external performance team and stated that the attraction merely provided the venue without being involved in the operation of the show.

In response to the outcry, the tourist site announced the termination of its contract with the performance partner and halted the act.

Customer service representatives confirmed that the performance has been removed from the schedule.

Officials from the Luquan District Culture, Radio, Television, Sports and Tourism Bureau acknowledged the public's concerns and announced that they have commenced an investigation.

They confirmed that the individuals involved in the performance were part of an external team, not staff members of the tourist site.

The investigation remains ongoing.
