Distinguished individuals from the Owa Kingdom are set to be honored with royal accolades as part of the events marking the 88th birthday of His Royal Majesty, Obi Efeizomor II.
The announcement was made on Saturday by the Ceremonial Planning Committee overseeing the week-long celebration of the esteemed octogenarian monarch.
While addressing reporters at the royal palace in Owa-Oyibu, Chief Nkenchor Okwuokenye, the chairman of the committee and Inneh of Owa Kingdom, mentioned that the highest honor, the title of ‘Owa Grandmaster,’ will be among more than a dozen awards presented to the deserving recipients, who will be revealed during the celebrations.
Okwuokenye, also serving as the Personal Assistant to the Obi, was joined by Prince Victor Efeizomor, the monarch's son and Senior Special Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Media, and Prince Jegbefume Frank, a member of the royal family.
He emphasized that Obi Efeizomor II is richly deserving of every recognition during this significant milestone, having reigned for nearly 66 years and being a beacon of modernity for the Owa Kingdom throughout this period.
A highlight of the upcoming royal festivities includes the Obi of Owa Unity Football Competition, set to kick off the sequence of events aimed at promoting unity.
Okwuokenye revealed that the grand finale of this novelty football tournament is planned for March 10, 2026, featuring participation from the eight clans that constitute Owa Kingdom.
The final match will occur at the University of Delta, Owa-Alero Campus, starting at 4 p.m., marking the sole event taking place outside the Obi's palace grounds.
The committee chairman announced that preliminary rounds of the competition have already commenced, engaging youth from all eight communities in a spirit of togetherness and friendly rivalry.
“This serves as a symbol of the unity and togetherness that characterizes Owa Kingdom under our revered monarch,” he added, emphasizing that prizes and cash awards will also be presented to noteworthy performers.
On the designated Award Day, March 12, the final ceremony will honor individuals from the kingdom for their contributions to its socio-economic and cultural growth.
“The occasion will celebrate excellence, dedication, and selflessness within Owa Kingdom,” Okwuokenye stated, affirming that it is a moment to recognize those who have positively impacted the community.
