The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has taken decisive action by sealing Bond Chemicals Industries Ltd situated in Oyo State due to breaches of regulatory environmental standards.
Nwamaka Ejiofor, NESREA’s assistant director of press, made this announcement in a statement released on Thursday in Abuja.
The closure of the chemical company was prompted by a public complaint that was confirmed through independent investigations, related to the discharge of untreated wastewater into the environment.
Ejiofor stated that a compliance inspection conducted by officials from the agency’s South-West Zonal Office on February 18 revealed that the facility did not have a working Effluent Treatment Plant.
She noted that the company was releasing untreated wastewater with an unpleasant odor into the surrounding environment, violating relevant environmental standards and regulations.
“After the inspection, the facility was formally notified and instructed to immediately eliminate the environmental hazard by installing and operating an effluent treatment system compliant with regulatory standards, as well as to secure necessary permits,” Ejiofor explained.
“However, a follow-up inspection indicated that the company had failed to comply with the agency’s directives.
“As a result, NESREA, under its statutory authority, has sealed the site to prevent any further environmental damage and to protect public health,” she stressed.
According to the statement, Innocent Barikor, the Director-General of NESREA, reiterated the need for all industrial operators to adhere to environmental regulations, which include the installation and proper functioning of pollution control systems.
Furthermore, the agency indicated that it would bolster its monitoring and enforcement activities nationwide, promising to impose suitable penalties on violators.
NESREA confirmed that the facility will remain closed until it fully complies with the issued directives, while additional investigations and compliance monitoring are still in progress.
