Peter Obi has voiced strong criticism against Nigerian leaders who he claims were once champions of democracy during the military rule of General Sani Abacha but are now actively undermining democratic processes. The former Labour Party Presidential candidate commented on social media that "power indeed reveals character."

He expressed dismay, stating, "Yesterday defenders of democracy, today's destroyers. What a shame."

Obi further elaborated on the perceived historical irony, writing, "What an irony of history, that the acclaimed defenders of democracy and human rights who claimed to have fought for democracy during the era of General Sani Abacha now find themselves worse than the man they opposed."

He concluded his statement by suggesting that General Sani Abacha, historically viewed as an oppressor, might now be seen as more democratic and respectful of human rights than those who were once vocal activists during the NADECO period. He reiterated that "Power indeed reveals character."
