The FCT police command has countered assertions circulating online that its officers opened fire on members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) at their headquarters in Garki II, calling the claims untrue and misleading.
The police reported that the situation unfolded following a distress call regarding violent confrontations between competing factions within the union. In light of the disturbances, officers apprehended seven individuals at the site, identified as Sularman Musa, Nasiru Ibrahim, Alhaji Sadisu Musa, Dalha Suleiman, Abdullahi Garba, Saheed Fojebi, and Ibikunle Baruwa. These suspects have been charged at Magistrate Court 1, Wuse Zone 2.
According to the police spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, around 300 people armed with cutlasses and other weapons invaded the NURTW headquarters on Sapele Street around 7 a.m., purportedly trying to enforce a court order without the presence of court officials.
“This led to physical altercations as other union members pushed back. During the fray, one individual suffered serious machete injuries to the neck and required police intervention, while several others with various wounds were transported to a nearby hospital for care,” Adeh stated.
Adept also clarified that no shots were fired by the police, ensuring that order has returned to the area.
The FCT Command appealed to the public to assist security agencies by providing prompt information through their emergency contact lines: 08032003913 and 08061581938, underscoring their dedication to maintaining the safety of all residents in the Federal Capital Territory.
