Renowned Journalist Shola Oshunkeye Celebrated at 70, Honoured by Dignitaries

A colloquium and book launch are scheduled to honour veteran journalist Shola Oshunkeye as he reaches the age of 70. The event will feature prominent figures from politics and media, including Clement Adesuyi Haastrup and Aremo Olusegun Osoba.

Distinguished personalities such as the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, former Ogun State Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba, and Ovation Media Group Chairman/Publisher Dele Momodu will be in attendance to celebrate Chief Executive Officer of The Crest Online, Shola Oshunkeye, as he turns 70. A special colloquium and book launch event is set to take place today, Thursday, commencing at 11 am at the Sir Kessington Adebutu Media Resource Centre of the Nigerian Institute of Journalism in Ogba, Lagos.

The colloquium's theme is centered on "The decline of human interest journalism in Nigeria." During the event, Osoba will preside as the Chairman, with Owa Haastrup serving as the Royal Father of the Day, and Momodu delivering the keynote address.

The book, slated for launch with Funke Otti, Chairman/Founder of Nairapoint Finance Limited, Lagos, as the Chief Launcher, will be reviewed by Lasisi Olagunju, the Editor of Saturday Tribune. The Mother of the Day will be Olusola Agbeja-Obada, a former Deputy Governor of Osun State and ex-Minister of State for Defence.

Mr. Oshunkeye, who marked his 70th birthday on April 20, 2026, has received accolades from various Nigerian figures, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. President Tinubu's congratulatory message, conveyed through a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on April 20, 2026, praised Mr. Oshunkeye's significant contributions.

In the statement, President Tinubu highlighted Mr. Oshunkeye's dedicated efforts towards the restoration of democracy and accountable governance in Nigeria, as well as his impactful role in advancing journalism in the country. He also commended Oshunkeye's unwavering commitment to uncovering truth across Africa, a dedication that earned him the 2006 CNN/MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year award for his investigative piece, "Niger’s Graveyard of the Living."

Mr. Oshunkeye, a Fellow of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, has had a distinguished career, serving in roles such as Editor of Weekend Concord, Senior Associate Editor at TELL Magazine, General Editor at The Sun Group, and Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of The Sun Publishing Ghana Limited, before his current position as President/CEO of The Crest Online.
