Rotimi Amaechi says Atiku will retain only non‑harmful Tinubu policies if elected in 2027

ADC vice‑presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi announced on Friday that a future Atiku Abubakar administration would keep only those economic policies of President Bola Tinubu that are not detrimental to Nigerians, while discarding the rest.

On Friday, Rotimi Amaechi, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential running mate, stated that a potential Atiku Abubakar government in 2027 will inherit only those economic policies of President Bola Tinubu that are not harmful to Nigerians, while discarding the rest.

Amaechi explained in an interview with News Central TV that the ADC will review Tinubu’s fiscal agenda with the cabinet. "We need to sit down with the cabinet to review his economic policies; the ones that are not detrimental we will inherit, the ones that are detrimental we will not inherit," he said.

He further accused the current administration of over‑taxing citizens. "Nigerians are overtaxed. What Tinubu is waiting for is for the elections to be over. The tax he has introduced, which is yet to take effect, would take N25 million from a N100 million account without consent. The bank would simply deduct it because the law has already been passed," Amaechi warned.

Amaechi claimed a member of the National Assembly, Ireti, confirmed that the law exists but is not being implemented because Tinubu fears its impact. "Initially they said I was lying, I kept quiet, but a member of the National Assembly, Ireti, said no, we passed the law but it’s not being implemented," he added.

He challenged the president to a public debate, saying the tax law could push voters toward the ADC if enforced. "It’s not implemented because Tinubu is afraid that if they see that law and it comes into effect, they may likely join the ADC," Amaechi concluded.

What policies might be retained?

The ADC plans to keep any of Tinubu’s measures that support growth without burdening citizens, though specific programmes were not listed.

What will be discarded?

Any policy deemed excessive or harmful—particularly the proposed wealth‑tax on large bank balances—will be scrapped under an Atiku‑led administration.

When could these changes occur?

If Atiku Abubakar wins the 2027 presidential election, the review and subsequent policy adjustments would begin shortly after inauguration.

Atiku Abubakar remains the ADC’s flag‑bearer for the 2027 race, positioning the party as a challenger to Tinubu’s legacy.
