Dr. Timothy Girling, a 55-year-old sexual health physician with a professed 'special interest' in male anatomy, has received a six-year prison sentence after being found guilty of secretly filming and sexually assaulting male patients.

Girling worked at a medical facility in Bournemouth, Dorset, where he preyed on vulnerable male patients by physically groping them and recording these incidents during intimate health examinations.

During the proceedings at Bournemouth Crown Court, it was revealed that the doctor manipulated his authority to exploit his patients and carried out numerous sexual offenses, all masked as legitimate medical practice.

His wrongdoing came to light after a male patient noticed Girling's iPhone recording at an examination session when he saw the phone sticking out of the doctor's pocket.

Following the revelation, Dorset Police initiated an investigation in August 2023, uncovering additional victims who had suffered sexual assaults from Girling, including one individual who was also recorded.

Upon searching the doctor’s electronic devices, investigators discovered numerous recordings and approximately 600 images depicting male anatomy, as well as indecent images involving minors. The evidence also included footage taken by Girling in a public restroom setting.

The court learned that the perpetrator had been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, which he claimed contributed to his unusual focus on anatomy.

A jury found Girling guilty on multiple counts, which included three charges of sexual assault and six counts of voyeurism, and he admitted to further offenses which involved producing indecent images of children.

It was stated in court that Girling frequently undertook inappropriate examinations under the guise of attending to complaints such as rashes or other health conditions.

A male patient first reported Girling to authorities after he became aware of the recording during an examination when he seized the doctor's phone, prompting Girling's quick exit from the clinic.

The victim later informed police that he had also been subject to inappropriate touching during a previous visit.

Prosecutors highlighted that Girling's examinations exceeded normal clinical requirements and that the patients involved believed these actions were part of standard medical procedures facilitated in a professional manner.

However, during a subsequent appointment, another patient was alarmed to hear the sound of a phone recording, only to find it partly hidden in Girling’s pocket.

Rebecca Austin, the prosecutor, stated that Girling exploited medical circumstances for personal sexual gratification. She emphasized that patients entered the clinic expecting to receive necessary medical attention, which they believed might include physical contact for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

One of the victims remarked, 'I left there crying because it was very wrong and he just abused his power,' sharing how he felt particularly vulnerable during such times.

Austin also noted Girling's autism diagnosis and explained that such conditions often lead to specialized interests, which in Girling’s case was fixation on male anatomy.

While imposing the sentence, Judge Jonathan Fuller KC noted that Girling had continued his misconduct even after being suspended and then reinstated due to prior complaints.

He remarked on Girling's peculiar habit of photographing men using public restrooms, an act which was not part of the formal charges.

The Judge further stated, 'Being a doctor represents a significant responsibility, and while you may have positively impacted many lives, you have also betrayed the trust of several others.'

Judge Fuller dismissed Girling’s autism as an excuse for his actions, asserting that his interest was explicitly sexual in nature and that he had malicious intent behind his actions.

Detective Constable Kit Little from Dorset Police remarked on how Girling had breached a fundamental trust by exploiting his professional role to gain sexual satisfaction, improperly touching and recording his patients.

He noted the diligent efforts made by law enforcement since receiving the first report to investigate Girling’s crimes and identify additional victims, expressing gratitude to those who bravely supported the inquiry and court processes.

Lucy Paddick of the Crown Prosecution Service stated, 'A doctor's role is to protect patients, not exploit them, and Timothy Girling repeatedly broke that crucial trust.'

She described the premeditated nature of Girling's offenses, describing how he manipulated vulnerable individuals in clinical settings, which should have provided them security and safety.

The case serves as a crucial reminder that such abuses of authority will face stringent prosecution by the Crown Prosecution Service.
