Authorities have apprehended an individual suspected in connection with the deaths of three women, following a pursuit across multiple states in the western U.S.
The suspect, 22-year-old Ivan Miller from Blakesburg, Iowa, was arrested on Thursday after investigators traced the vehicle of one of the victims across state lines.
As reported by the Utah Department of Public Safety, the vehicle’s journey was tracked from southern Utah through northern Arizona and eventually into Colorado.
Law enforcement subsequently located the abandoned vehicle in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. The suspect was arrested shortly thereafter without incident.
Officials have indicated that there are no further threats to the public, and no additional suspects are being pursued at this time.
The investigation commenced on Wednesday afternoon when officials received a notification regarding two women discovered deceased along a hiking trail in Wayne County, Utah.
As they delved further into the investigation, a third victim was found deceased at a residence within the same county.
According to Lt. Cameron Roden of the Utah Highway Patrol, the victims were women aged in their 30s, 40s, and 80s. Earlier reports mistakenly suggested that one victim was in her 60s.
The elderly woman found in the home did not appear to be associated with the two women discovered on the hiking trail; authorities have yet to release the names of the victims publicly.
Wayne County, located approximately 200 miles south of Salt Lake City, has around 2,500 residents and is recognized for its outdoor recreational sites, attracting numerous hikers and visitors to attractions like Capitol Reef National Park and Canyonlands National Park.
Authorities have classified the case as a homicide investigation but have not disclosed the causes of death for the victims.
The Utah State Bureau of Investigation and the Utah Crime Lab are actively analyzing two crime scenes around the Lyman and Torrey regions.
Before the suspect’s capture, officials had advised the community to stay vigilant and undertake safety measures, such as securely locking doors and avoiding isolation.
The manhunt resulted in the temporary closure of several local facilities on Thursday, including the Wayne Community Health Center, Kazan Memorial Clinic, and the Wayne County Courthouse. The Wayne County School District announced that schools would remain closed for the remainder of the week, assuring support from counselors when classes reconvene.
