President Bola Tinubu has officially lauded the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, commonly known as the EFCC, following formal recognition from the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding a high-profile international crime investigation. The commendation comes after the Nigerian anti-graft body played a pivotal role in apprehending and extraditing individuals involved in cross-border financial and sexual extortion crimes targeting minors.
The official acknowledgment was made public through a press release issued on Saturday, October 31, 2026, by Bayo Onanuga, who serves as the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. According to the release, the foreign law enforcement praise highlights the growing efficacy of bilateral security partnerships between Nigeria and global investigative bodies.
What led to the international commendation?
The recognition stems from Operation Artemis, a coordinated multi-national investigative effort directed at dismantling syndicate networks engaged in the sexual exploitation and coercion of children. Through this joint initiative, two Nigerian male suspects—identified as Adebola Festus Adekunle and Mudasiru Afeez Olawale—were successfully apprehended and extradited to the United States in August 2026 to face formal federal charges.
In an official correspondence sent to EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede, FBI Director Kash Patel emphasized the indispensable nature of the Nigerian agency's partnership. “The successful outcome of these cases would not have been possible without your assistance and dedication to international law enforcement collaboration,” Patel stated in the letter.
How did the Presidency react to the development?
Responding to the accolades from Washington, President Tinubu expressed immense pride in the leadership and operational personnel of the EFCC, attributing the success to exceptional professionalism and steadfast commitment to global justice.
Reiterating his administration's uncompromising stance against transnational and domestic criminal syndicates, the Nigerian leader issued a stern warning against illicit activities within the country's borders. “Nigeria must never become a haven for criminals who exploit innocent people, whether at home or abroad,” the President emphasized.
Looking ahead, the presidency has encouraged the EFCC alongside other domestic security institutions to maintain their operational momentum. President Tinubu further assured anti-corruption and law enforcement personnel of continued governmental backing as they strive to eradicate financial crimes and ensure that wrongdoers face the full weight of the law.
