President Bola Tinubu has urged young Nigerians to ensure their active involvement in the upcoming 2027 general elections, emphasizing that the democratic exercise directly impacts their collective destiny. Addressing a political gathering hosted by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, the Nigerian leader noted that the outcome of the polls holds profound consequences for the younger generation.
Directing his message specifically to the youth demographic during the Saturday event, the President stressed that they bear the responsibility of defining the country's trajectory through active electoral participation.
"To the youth of Nigeria, I’m looking at you. This election is about you. It’s not about me. Your future depends on this election," he stated.
He further charged citizens who have completed their voter registration but are yet to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to visit designated collection points, characterizing the card as a vital tool for choosing the nation's leaders.
Tinubu implored young people not to squander the chance to influence governance, reiterating that their ballots provide them with the necessary leverage to steer the country's future.
"It is left for you to use the weapon you have. And that weapon is the PVC. If you have not collected yours, please go ahead and collect it. Please. I beg you. I take God beg you," Tinubu appealed.
What did the administration say about economic policies?
Transitioning to governance matters, the President underscored his administration's economic agenda, asserting that wealth redistribution and sustainable development remain critical to elevating living standards, particularly for the youth.
He explained that his government continues to tackle legacy financial obligations passed down by prior administrations, which include settled and pending arrears on pensions and gratuities meant for senior citizens.
According to the President, massive financial liabilities running into billions and trillions of naira had accumulated prior to his assumption of office, though active steps are being taken to clear the backlog.
"The people that governed before, they left unpaid pensions and gratuity in billions and trillions of naira. That is being cleared. So that every family is included. We are sharing prosperity already," he affirmed.
Tinubu concluded that these interventions form a core component of his administration's broader pledge to guarantee that a wider segment of Nigerian households reap the benefits of economic reforms and public policies.
