Retired senior officers from Nigeria’s paramilitary forces have expressed strong approval for President Bola Tinubu's recent sanction of a lifetime salary scheme for high-ranking officials. They consider this a landmark initiative aimed at resolving long-standing welfare issues faced by retired personnel.

The positive reception was voiced during a formal meeting with the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. The delegation comprised former Controller- Generals and other senior figures from agencies such as the Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Federal Fire Service, and the Nigerian Correctional Service.

Chukwura Udeh, a former Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, spoke on behalf of the group, stating that the approval brings a much-needed resolution to years of financial instability and challenges experienced by retired officers. He highlighted that previous administrations had not succeeded in resolving this critical issue, leaving many former officials in precarious financial situations despite their dedicated service.

Udeh further emphasized that the new salary structure signifies more than just a policy change; it represents a profound acknowledgement of the sacrifices made by these individuals and offers assurance that their national service will not culminate in destitution.

In his remarks, Minister Tunji-Ojo underscored the current administration's commitment to prioritizing the well-being of both active and retired members of the security services. He stated that national development inherently involves caring for those who protect the nation, and the government's reform agenda is designed to prevent any officer from retiring into poverty.

The minister also detailed ongoing reform efforts across the paramilitary agencies. These include addressing backlogs in promotions and implementing regular promotion cycles, which he noted have significantly boosted staff morale and professional standards.

This development is widely viewed as a component of broader federal government initiatives to bolster welfare systems within Nigeria's security apparatus and to rebuild trust among its personnel.
