The Cannes Film Festival’s Directors’ Fortnight recently showcased a striking new drama titled **Clarissa**, directed by Nigerian twin filmmakers [Arie Esiri](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arie_Esiri) and his brother Chuko. Building on the critical success of their debut *Eyimofe* (also known as *This Is My Desire*), the brothers have transposed Virginia Woolf’s classic 1925 novel *Mrs. Dalloway* to the bustling streets of modern Lagos.
The story centres on Clarissa, portrayed by Oscar‑nominated actress Sophie Okonedo, as she prepares a lavish soirée for Lagos’s elite. Over the course of the evening, memories long buried, former romances, and unresolved feelings begin to surface, echoing the introspective tone of Woolf’s original work.
Running alongside Clarissa’s narrative is Septimus, a young soldier haunted by hidden trauma, played by Fortune Nwafor. The film juxtaposes the glitter of Lagos high society with the quiet inner battles of characters who are often ignored by the surrounding world.
The ensemble brings together a blend of Nigerian and international talent. India Amarteifio appears as a younger Clarissa, while David Oyelowo shares the screen with Toheeb Jimoh, who depicts his character’s earlier years. Additional cast members include Nikki Amuka‑Bird, Ayo Edebiri, Jude Akuwudike, Danny Sapani, Modesinuola Ogundiwin, Chuks Joseph, and Nollywood legend Joke Silva.
Screenwriter Chuko Esiri, alongside producers Theresa Park, Nicholas Weinstock, Arie Esiri and Chuko Esiri, have secured a distribution deal with NEON following the film’s Cannes premiere. *Clarissa* is slated for a limited theatrical release on 11 December 2026.
The trailer, which offers a glimpse of the film’s vibrant Lagos setting and its emotional depth, is now available online.
