A devastating soil collapse in Boyekai town, within Sokoto State's Goronyo Local Government Area, has led to the untimely demise of two children. The incident took place on Wednesday morning when a group of children, reportedly from the same family, were digging for laterite to repair their homes in preparation for the upcoming rainy season.
The victims, identified as Yahuza Ibrahim and Mubarak Dandare, were reportedly under the age of 11. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the children had joined their elder sibling at the site, a location frequently used by residents for sourcing construction materials, around 10:00 a.m.
After one of the children had transported a portion of the soil home using a donkey, the remaining children continued their excavation work. Tragically, the pit they were digging in suddenly caved in, trapping the children beneath the earth.
A resident of the community, Yahaya Boyekai, recounted that the initial presence of other individuals at the site did not immediately lead to a rescue effort, as the gravity of the situation was not immediately apparent.
“By the time they noticed and rushed to rescue them, it was already too late. The children had d!ed before they could be brought out,” he stated.
The bodies of the deceased children were recovered and subsequently buried on the same day, following Islamic customs.
Another community member, Alhaji Alu Usha Boyekai, confirmed the unfortunate event. He further disclosed that while more than two children were initially at the site, some were successfully rescued and are currently receiving medical attention for their injuries.
Alhaji Boyekai also voiced concerns regarding the recurring nature of such accidents in the area. He recalled a similar past incident where a man tragically lost his life in a soil collapse shortly before his wedding.
This latest incident has reignited concerns about the safety risks associated with informal excavation activities in the region, particularly for children who often participate in such tasks.
