Mehmet Poroy, the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, highlighted Türkiye's strong interest in Nigeria, stemming from both nations facing similar existential threats, particularly in their battle against terrorism.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Ambassador Poroy stated that both countries have a mutual interest in devising effective counterterrorism strategies to address these challenges.
He elaborated that over the years, Türkiye has successfully countered numerous terrorist factions and has garnered valuable experience that they are ready to share with Nigeria, along with their capabilities and resources.
The ambassador stressed that Nigeria's triumph in combating terrorism is vital for the stability of both the West African region and the broader African continent.
"What makes Nigeria particularly significant to us is the similarity in the challenges our nations face," he remarked. "We have confronted various terrorist groups over the years and achieved considerable success. Nigeria is similarly combating several terrorist organizations, notably Boko Haram and ISWAP."
Poroy expressed Türkiye's intention to assist Nigeria by sharing its expertise, resources, and military capabilities.
He mentioned that Türkiye has enhanced its defense industry to tackle security threats domestically and in neighboring regions. This development has allowed the Turkish military to successfully neutralize the terrorist menace, a strategy that could potentially be implemented in Nigeria through pivotal collaboration in defense initiatives between the two nations.
"We are engaging with our Nigerian partners to strengthen military cooperation, as our president has committed to supporting Nigeria in its battle against terrorism. Alongside military supplies and essential systems, our companies are also collaborating with Nigerian authorities for the local production of defense equipment within Nigeria," Mr. Poroy stated.
Additionally, Türkiye's interest in Nigeria is driven by the country's prominent role as the largest economy in West Africa and the fourth largest in Africa, a fact that is not overlooked.
The ambassador pointed out Nigeria's strategic relevance to Türkiye, given its population exceeding 230 million, presenting vast economic potential and the opportunity for deepened economic partnerships.
"As the largest nation on the continent, Nigeria is seen by Türkiye as a key strategic ally," he reiterated.
Poroy concluded by affirming, "Presently, we continue to recognize Nigeria as a vital strategic partner." He also reflected on the historical ties between Türkiye and Nigeria, dating back to the 16th century, during the interactions between the Ottoman Empire and the Kanem-Bornu Empire.
The establishment of an embassy in Nigeria on November 9, 1960, immediately after Nigeria gained its independence, underscores the significance Türkiye attaches to its relations with Nigeria over the years.
