The relatives of Justice Okereke Ezechimere have pushed back against accusations of domestic violence leveled by his wife, Esther Okereke, claiming instead that she is the one being aggressive.
Esther, known for her hair business, took to social media to voice her fears of assault by her husband, alleging that he intended to harm her to gain control over her property.
In a widely circulated video, Esther discussed enduring eight years of alleged abuse and violence during their marriage.
She pointed out her recent return from a business trip to Vietnam, during which she claimed Justice took her important documents and vacated their shared residence.
Reports indicate that Justice was detained on February 10 and initially taken to Ago Police Station; he was later moved to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja.
However, a family source contends that Esther has a history of physically hitting Justice, while he has never laid a hand on her. The source described an incident where Esther's mother allegedly struck Justice and tore his clothing.
The source further claimed that they had jointly built their house, but after its completion, Esther expressed a desire to end the marriage, prompting Justice to secure their house documents for protection.
Video evidence shared by the family depicts Justice's cousin in a shirt stained with blood, which they assert was the result of an altercation involving Esther.
A clip shows Justice's cousin attempting to break free from Esther’s hold, as family members expressed their perspective on the situation.
"This is Esther, the hair vendor, on the day the viral incident occurred," the family source cited. "Her husband is trying to document the event but pauses upon realizing Esther’s unpredictable nature. On that day, she attacked her husband's cousin, leading to bleeding from his mouth."
Continued the source, "He was employed to build the home from the ground up due to his engineering background, but regulations in their shared household forced him to leave unexpectedly, despite Justice wishing for him to stay as Esther’s family members were also residing there."
In another development, the source mentioned that on January 11, police seized some vehicles from the compound as collateral.
"This footage derives from the 11th of February, coinciding with Esther posting her version of events online, while her husband had just been arrested the previous day and taken through various police facilities," the source clarified.
The source also noted that while allegations of Justice owing Esther’s friend a massive sum circulated, the family's claim suggested they're both owners of the property and highlighted that Esther has consistently expressed interest in a divorce without progressing any official documents.
Justice reportedly remains in FCID Abuja, unaware he is at the center of unsubstantiated claims he has never committed.
According to the family source, Justice is a victim of dishonesty and has avoided retaliating against Esther’s assaults, citing her asthma condition. "He has been enduring a lot, and those close to them can testify to his struggles."
