Rabiu Kwankwaso, the vice-presidential running mate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, recently clarified the motivations behind shelving his own presidential ambitions to support the party's standard-bearer, Peter Obi. During a media interaction at his private residence in Kano State on Sunday, Kwankwaso noted that his decision was rooted in a commitment to national equity and confidence in Obi's integrity.
He stated that the arrangement ensures geographic balance by allowing a leader from the southern region to manage the nation's affairs.
Why did Kwankwaso step down for Obi?
Kwankwaso pointed out that despite pursuing the presidency in three successive election cycles, he chose to halt his active campaign to bolster a joint ticket with Obi. He emphasized that both politicians share identical visions for national development and possess the capability to steer the country effectively.
"I made a sacrifice for Peter Obi because he is credible and from the South," Kwankwaso explained during the interview. "We have the same goals and beliefs. We are strong and can easily handle the country's affairs."
What is the stance on the southern presidency?
The leader of the prominent Kwankwasiyya political movement further stressed that ensuring fairness within Nigeria's administrative framework requires allowing a southern candidate to complete a full presidential cycle. He urged the electorate to rally behind the ticket to foster unity and uphold principles of rotational leadership.
