An astonishing incident occurred when a woman accidentally ingested a 17cm long spoon after an unexpected event.
Reymy Amelinckx, the individual involved, reported that she swallowed the spoon while she was consuming yoghurt. Her dog, a Hungarian Vizsla named Marley, leaped onto her lap, and in a moment of fright, she ended up choking on the spoon.
The 28-year-old recounted her ordeal, stating that she faced a split-second decision between choking or swallowing the spoon. She felt the utensil 'sliding down smoothly into her stomach'.
Reymy, who hails from Rumst, Belgium, shared how she was seated comfortably on her couch enjoying her yoghurt when Marley unexpectedly jumped onto her. "I placed the spoon in my mouth so I could use my hands to respond to a message on my phone," she explained. "In that moment, Marley leaped at me, causing me to jerk back, and suddenly the spoon lodged itself in my throat.
"I immediately stood up, overcome with panic," she recalled.
The medical representative attempted to extract the spoon using her hands but realized the situation was too precarious. "Everything happened so quickly; it was either I choked or swallowed it," she stated.
When her boyfriend returned home later that day, Reymy was too embarrassed to mention her predicament and chose to act as if nothing was wrong. "I didn't feel unwell at that moment, so I didn't disclose it. It wasn't until after dinner that I recognized the seriousness of the situation," she mentioned.
Upon consulting with doctors, she learned that the size of the spoon made it impossible for it to pass naturally, compelling her to wait for a scheduled gastroscopy for its removal.
Reymy described her night as challenging, claiming that she felt the spoon repositioning inside her, causing discomfort that sometimes radiated between her ribs. "It was terrifying; I felt bloated and nauseous, and eating became uneasy. Sleeping was also problematic as every position I took was a reminder of the spoon inside me," she stated.
The spoon was ultimately extracted two days later under local anaesthetic. In a somewhat complicated procedure, doctors had to manipulate it within her stomach, leading to a minor gastric hemorrhage.
Reymy shared her relief once the spoon was finally removed, saying, "Though it was unpleasant, I experienced pure relief when it came out.
"I did have a sore throat from the irritation in my oesophagus, faced minor bleeding episodes, and dealt with a sensitive stomach for a while, but thankfully, there was no lasting damage.
"However, I now hold the unique title of 'that girl with the spoon.'"
In a twist of fate, despite the traumatic experience, Reymy has decided to keep the spoon as a memento of her ordeal.
"My boyfriend thinks it would be interesting to transform it into a piece of art," she added. "He’s still brainstorming what exactly, but it’s sure to be an extraordinary creation."
