The Yobe State Government announced plans on Sunday to establish a dedicated Child Protection Commission aimed at addressing rising cases of abuse and safeguarding the welfare of minors.
[Barrister Abubakar Bukar Kagu](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attorney- General), the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, revealed that the proposed agency will function as a specialized body to tackle child rights violations and secure justice for affected victims.
According to Kagu, the initiative followed extensive consultations with key justice sector actors, including the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), the Law Officers Association, and various civil society organizations. These groups highlighted significant loopholes in the existing child protection systems within the state.
"Years of insurgency have compounded these social challenges, especially for children. Hence, it is about time for a new, comprehensive and more robust framework for their protection," Kagu stated.
He pointed out that the current administrative arrangement—relying on a single desk officer and limited committees—is entirely inadequate for managing the increasing volume of child abuse and neglect cases, which have surged following prolonged insurgency that left numerous minors vulnerable.
Kagu confirmed that the Ministry of Justice has received instructions to prepare a formal proposal for the commission's establishment, which will be submitted to Governor Mai Mala Buni for approval.
"Our intent is to bring on board a new quasi-judicial architecture with powers to receive complaints, summon persons, investigate issues/reports, hold inquiries, refer cases for prosecution, and make recommendations to relevant bodies, including the State Assembly," Kagu explained.
He further noted that the agency will operate with an independent budget and dedicated personnel to ensure maximum efficiency and an uncompromising focus on child welfare matters.
The Attorney-General emphasized that the administration remains resolute in ensuring that individuals who violate the rights of children face strict legal consequences.
He referenced earlier legislative milestones, noting that Governor Buni previously signed the Yobe State Child Protection Law 2022 and the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law 2022, which collectively serve as the foundational legal structure protecting vulnerable citizens.
The impending commission is designed to build upon these legislative measures, delivering a more forceful institutional response to ongoing child protection hurdles in Yobe State.
