Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal praised the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, for his unifying leadership and humility during a major cultural and religious event held in Sokoto State.
Governor Lawal made this remark on Monday at the International Conference Centre in Sokoto, during the 13th Shaikh Usmanu Bin Fodiyo Week alongside the 20th coronation anniversary of the monarch. The event, themed ‘Reviving Ethical Leadership and Social Harmony: Lessons from Sokoto Jihad Leaders’, attracted prominent dignitaries from across Nigeria and other regions.
What did Governor Lawal say about the Sultan's reign?
Speaking as a special guest, Lawal stated that the people and government of Zamfara State draw profound inspiration from the traditional ruler's wisdom and steady guidance, particularly amidst ongoing regional security and social hurdles.
Conveying his felicitations, the governor remarked, “With immense joy, respect, and gratitude to Almighty Allah (SWT), on behalf of the government and people of Zamfara State, I congratulate His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, 20th Sultan of Sokoto and leader of the Ummah, on the historic 20th anniversary of his coronation.”
Lawal also acknowledged the monarch's recent visit to Gusau, where the Sultan supported the presentation of staffs of office to 19 newly appointed emirs, highlighting the collaborative strengthening of traditional structures in the region.
How does the Sokoto Caliphate legacy apply today?
The governor emphasized that the historical foundations of the Sokoto Caliphate extend far beyond immediate geographic boundaries. He noted that principles such as moral discipline, knowledge, justice, and human dignity are still vital for tackling contemporary societal issues.
Addressing local challenges, Lawal added, “Closer to home in Zamfara State, this legacy carries a particularly compelling message. At a time when insecurity, moral decline, poverty and youth vulnerability threaten our communities, we must draw inspiration from the teachings of Sheikh Usmanu Dan Fodiyo to promote peace, justice, education and social responsibility.”
In his response, the Sultan expressed deep appreciation to all individuals who contributed to the success of his two decades on the throne, urging religious, community, and traditional custodians to redouble their efforts toward fostering lasting peace across the country.
