The Rolan Foundation has intensified its initiatives to enhance accessibility to eye care in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), successfully reaching at least 1,000 community members through a comprehensive free medical outreach.

On Saturday, Mr. Olorunisola Azeez, who serves as the FCT Coordinator for the foundation, reported that the outreach initiative provided essential services such as free eye screenings, the dispensing of eyeglasses and eye drops, along with fundamental health check-ups for individuals aged 38 years and older.

This outreach was part of the Abuja Vision Support Programme 2026 and was executed in partnership with the Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB) alongside the FCT chapter of the Nigerian Optometric Association.

Azeez emphasized that this intervention was targeted at addressing the gaps in access to quality eye care among underserved communities in various grassroots areas.

He highlighted that vision impairment can severely hinder productivity and diminish the quality of life, which underscores the pressing need for professional optometric services.

“The outreach provides free eye screenings, scans, medications, and prescription eyeglasses to beneficiaries who would otherwise be unable to afford such services,” he noted.

The program initially commenced earlier in the week at the Gwagwalada Area Council Secretariat and then progressed to the Chief’s Palace in Garki within the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) to enhance accessibility for locals.

“While the outreach was conducted in Garki, individuals from several area councils across the FCT attended. Common eye issues encountered included itching, pain, dryness, and difficulty reading small print, with suitable medications and corrective lenses being supplied as required,” Azeez remarked.
