The electoral race to represent Delta North Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate in 2027 is shaping up as a two-horse contest between former Delta State Governor Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly Victor Ochei of the National Democratic Party (NDC). The election is scheduled for January 16, 2027.
Both contenders possess extensive public service backgrounds. Okowa, a medical doctor, has served as local government chairman, Commissioner for Health, Secretary to the Delta State Government, Senator, two-term Governor, and Vice- Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general election. Ochei, a Chemical Engineering graduate, founded Day Notch Nigeria Limited, represented Aniocha North in the State Assembly, rose to Deputy Minority Leader and Speaker, and later served as Executive Director of Maritime Labour and Cabotage Services at the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and President of the Nigeria Tennis Federation.
What are Okowa's political strengths?
Observers describe Okowa as a grassroots mobiliser with over three decades in politics across the nine local government areas that constitute Delta North. His experience spans both executive and legislative arms, giving him verifiable projects to showcase. As a perceived establishment candidate, he may benefit from state government organisational and financial support. Traditional rulers have held consultative meetings endorsing his candidacy, though Ochei's camp dismisses these as a smokescreen in a one-man-one-vote system.
What is Ochei's campaign message?
At 57, Ochei positions himself as a youthful alternative advocating generational leadership shift. His message resonates with younger voters across the district. He criticises what he terms a clandestine political dynasty by Okowa and highlights alleged infrastructural decay in Delta North despite the zone's contribution to the APC's state-level victory. Ochei has unveiled a 10-point agenda covering inclusive governance, security, power, job creation, infrastructure, agriculture, and productivity. He also leverages the integrity of Peter Obi, the Labour Party presidential candidate in 2023, and attacks the economic hardship following fuel subsidy removal by the APC-led federal administration.
Can Ochei upstage the former governor?
Supporters of Okowa label Ochei a lightweight, yet those close to the former Speaker describe him as a tenacious optimist unafraid of political battles. The race remains fluid, with both camps expressing confidence. Analysts caution that projections are speculative and the outcome will ultimately be decided by voters in the nine councils of Anioma land.
