Authorities in Niger State have arrested a 59-year-old blind man named Julius Nyikwa, who has been accused of sexually assaulting his wife's 10-year-old niece in the Keteren-Gwari neighborhood of Minna.
The alleged crime took place on February 16, 2026, when it is said that Nyikwa lured the young girl into his room and assaulted her.
According to a report from Punch, Nyikwa's wife is the aunt of the victim, and both families reside in the same compound. This information was confirmed by the Niger State Police Command's spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, who reassured the public that the suspect will be brought to justice.
The police also disclosed that this was not the first instance of abuse, indicating a troubling pattern regarding the suspect's actions.
In a statement to the media, SP Abiodun detailed the events, stating, “On 16th February, 2026, at about 2 PM, a case of rape was reported at ‘B’ Division Minna, indicating that Julius Nyikwa, a suspected blind man from Keteren- Gwari, had raped a 10-year-old girl from the same compound.”
Further investigations revealed that the suspect’s wife is the sister of the victim's mother, and they all live in a close-knit family arrangement. Additionally, the police clarified that Nyikwa had repeatedly taken advantage of the minor.
Eyewitnesses noted that during the last incident, the victim was observed entering the suspect’s room, which led to an alarm being raised by the child's grandmother, prompting neighbors to respond and assist in apprehending Nyikwa.
The case has since been forwarded to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for thorough investigation, with plans for the suspect to face legal proceedings soon.
