A High Court sitting in Katsina State has granted an interim injunction that prevents certain individuals within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) from presenting themselves as the party's officials in the state. This directive is in effect until the court can fully adjudicate on a lawsuit filed before it.
The court's decision stemmed from an ex parte motion submitted by Usman Wamba, who asserts his position as the chairman of the ADC in Katsina. Wamba's suit challenges perceived efforts to undermine his leadership role within the party.
In the order delivered by Justice A. K. Tukur on April 7, 2026, the court explicitly barred Lawan Batagarawa and Babangida Ibrahim Mahuta from claiming to be leaders or stakeholders of the ADC's Katsina chapter.
Furthermore, the ruling prohibits them from managing the party's affairs or organising any congresses within the state while the substantive motion is being heard.
The court also issued an order restraining the national leadership of the ADC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from endorsing or overseeing any congresses initiated by the defendants.
Justice Tukur mandated that all parties involved must adhere to the existing state of affairs concerning the leadership and ongoing activities of the ADC in Katsina State.
The court granted permission for the plaintiff to serve the court documents to the defendants, including those residing outside Katsina and specifically in Abuja, via a courier service.
The legal proceedings have been scheduled for April 15, 2026, for the hearing of the main motion.
When approached for comment, Barrister Mustapha Shiru Mahuta, the legal adviser for the Katsina State chapter of the ADC, confirmed that the party had received the court's order. He stated that the state's legal team is currently reviewing the document to determine the next course of action.
