The FCT Command of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) has stated that suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, remains in their custody. This clarification was issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer (CPRO), Samson Duza, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

Duza explained that the statement became necessary following reports that Kyari had been discharged by a court. He clarified that Kyari is involved in two distinct legal cases. The recent court decision pertains to a charge concerning alleged wrongful declaration of assets, in which Kyari was discharged due to insufficient evidence presented by the prosecution.

According to the CPRO, the presiding judge found the case regarding asset declaration to be weak and unsubstantiated. However, Duza emphasized that Kyari continues to be held because of a separate, ongoing case involving alleged drug-related offences.

He further elaborated that the trial for the drug charges has not reached a conclusion, meaning Kyari will remain in NCoS custody until the court proceedings are finalized. NAN reports that Kyari, a former head of the Nigeria Police Force’s Intelligence Response Team (IRT), is facing legal challenges linked to accusations of drug trafficking activities.

The correctional authorities' statement serves to correct widespread media reports suggesting Kyari's complete discharge from all legal entanglements. The NCoS reiterated that the suspended police officer is lawfully detained pending the final verdict in the drug-related case before the court.
