Abia State has been selected to host a proposed stroke and neurovascular centre serving Nigeria and West Africa, following its presentation at the recent Sweden-Africa Neurosurgery Symposium. State officials also highlighted ongoing health sector reforms, public health preparedness, and developments in agriculture and housing.

Abia State has been designated as the preferred host location for a proposed regional stroke and neurovascular centre intended to serve Nigeria and the wider West African subregion, following the state's engagement at the 2026 Sweden-Africa Neurosurgery Symposium held in Gothenburg, Sweden.

Prince Okey Kanu, the Abia State Commissioner for Information, announced the development during a media briefing detailing the decisions reached at the State Executive Council meeting, which was presided over by Governor Alex Otti at the Government House in Umuahia.

What led to Abia being selected for the neurovascular centre?

According to the state government, the choice of Abia was informed by its recent advancements in healthcare delivery and the availability of competent medical professionals. The proposed facility is designed to tackle the growing prevalence of stroke across Nigeria and Africa by offering advanced medical infrastructure for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of complex neurovascular disorders.

As part of its international engagements, the state Ministry of Health also showcased its broader healthcare transformations at the symposium, where it received recognition as a national self-care champion for its efforts in promoting preventive medicine and community wellness.

How is the state handling public health security?

Addressing infectious disease preparedness, Commissioner Kanu noted that the administration has constituted a multi-sectoral frontline technical working group to bolster emergency response protocols. This team has formulated a comprehensive Ebola preparedness and response strategy, complemented by the deployment of advanced medical technology across specialized health institutions.

Key infrastructure projects completed to support these efforts include the newly constructed Infectious Disease Hospital in Aba, alongside a dedicated infectious disease facility and specialist hospital in Umuahia. Authorities confirmed that despite these heightened preparedness measures, no confirmed cases of Ebola, Lassa fever, COVID-19, diphtheria, cholera, or avian influenza have been recorded in the state.

What updates were given on agriculture and housing?

Shifting to the economy, the government reported steady progress on its agricultural intervention drive across all 17 local government areas, executed in collaboration with local councils to stimulate job creation, attract investments, and enhance food security. Notably, Arochukwu Local Government Area was commended for establishing a plantation comprising over 86,000 trees.

In the housing sector, the administration's residential scheme at the Pocket Layout has witnessed massive demand. The Commissioner for Housing, Architect Chiemela Uzoije, disclosed that more than 530 applications were received for the 173 available housing units. To ensure fairness and transparency, the government is evaluating the use of a lottery allocation system.

Furthermore, the state is conducting a comprehensive evaluation of existing residential estates to identify and bridge infrastructure deficits involving internal roads, utilities, and security amenities. Meanwhile, special adviser Ferdinand Ekeoma encouraged media oversight regarding abandoned federal projects in the region, noting that the state government continues to provide necessary land and logistical support to facilitate infrastructural development.
