Zamfara Places Focus on Primary Healthcare and Accountability for 2027 Budget

The Zamfara State Government has placed primary healthcare, preventive services, and accountability at the center of its planning for the 2027 health sector budget during a recent operational planning workshop in Kaduna.

The Zamfara State Government has anchored its preparations for the 2027 health sector budget on primary healthcare, preventive interventions, and institutional accountability. This development was highlighted during a five- day validation and harmonisation workshop held from October 27 to 31 at the Royal Blue Luxury International Hotels in Kaduna, convened by the Zamfara State Ministry of Health to formulate its 2027 Annual Operational Plan (AOP).

What were the primary objectives of the Kaduna workshop?

The primary objective of the session was to craft an evidence-backed operational framework capable of translating state-level health policies into actionable initiatives complete with definite execution schedules, financial allocations, and trackable results. Dr. Nafisa Muhammad Maradun, the State Commissioner for Health, explained that the strategy guarantees that future health projects correspond strictly with obtainable funds and the administration's core objectives.

Furthermore, the commissioner restated the dedication of the Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, toward transforming the medical sector. She pointed out that the previous declaration of a state of emergency in health served as a foundational step to confront systemic decay.

How does the government plan to improve service delivery?

Maradun emphasized that physical infrastructure upgrades must be matched with sufficient personnel, a steady supply of essential pharmaceuticals, and rigorous monitoring mechanisms. She stressed that the 2027 operational blueprint prioritizes primary healthcare delivery, preventive medicine, and transparency across all rungs of service.

Participants were tasked with formulating pragmatic, cost-effective, and well- coordinated initiatives to avoid overlapping responsibilities between state agencies and supporting organizations. Ultimately, the deliberations aim to deliver a consolidated financial and operational document designed to maximize resource efficiency and foster open governance throughout program execution.

The strategic planning sessions received backing from key international and local stakeholders, including the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Solina, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, the Federal Ministry of Health, the SWAp Coordination Office, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and CHECOD.
