Bolaji Abdullahi, the National Publicity Secretary for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has stated that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) appears to be adopting positions similar to those of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party in power.
Abdullahi articulated the ADC's apprehensions during an interview on ARISE Television, highlighting a perceived trend where INEC's communications on matters concerning opposition parties echo the sentiments of the APC.
"Why is INEC and APC suddenly singing from the same hymn book?" Abdullahi questioned during the television broadcast, underscoring the ADC's view of the situation.
He defended the ADC's decision to appoint representatives and envoys in various countries, asserting that this is a legitimate political strategy. According to Abdullahi, the aim is to connect with Nigerians residing abroad and to bolster the party's organisational structure.
The party spokesperson elaborated that individuals living in these countries have been tasked with monitoring political developments and cultivating strategic alliances on behalf of the ADC.
"We have members of our party who live in those countries, and we are assigning them tasks to report on issues and build relationships for us. This action is entirely legal and does not contravene any laws. We are a party that operates within the legal framework," he affirmed.
Abdullahi also addressed criticisms directed at the ADC's activities, contending that the party is being subjected to unfair scrutiny and that many of the accusations levelled against it are politically motivated.
Furthermore, he alleged that the APC is instrumental in the internal challenges experienced by opposition parties, characterising this as part of a broader effort to interfere politically.
He reiterated the ADC's commitment to adhering to constitutional and legal procedures, including its planned congresses and conventions, which he confirmed have been duly communicated to INEC as mandated by electoral regulations.
"We have informed INEC as required by law. Our congresses and conventions will proceed in accordance with the Electoral Act," Abdullahi confirmed.
He also dismissed warnings that the party might face repercussions for its internal organisational processes, maintaining that due diligence has been observed and that political parties are regulated by law, not by arbitrary decisions.
