The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has designated Jalal Jayed, a Moroccan referee, to officiate the highly anticipated third-place match in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, which is set to feature Nigeria opposing Egypt.
CAF formally announced the officiating team for the match, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, January 17, at 5 PM local time in the Mohammed V Stadium.
Jayed will be leading a skilled officiating squad comprising referees from various African countries for this significant playoff, where two of Africa’s football powerhouses are set to clash.
Assisting Jayed will be Zakaria Brinsi and Akarkad Mostafa serving as assistant referees on the flanks, while Hassani Khalil has been appointed as the third assistant referee.
Peter Waweru Kamaku from Kenya will take on the role of fourth official, responsible for managing substitutions and overseeing the technical area during the match.
Furthermore, an Algerian referee, Lahlou Benbraham, has been assigned to supervise the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system for this fixture. Assisting Benbraham will be Haythem Guirat as Assistant VAR 1 and Hamza El Fariq as Assistant VAR 2, while Sinko Zeli will serve as the referee assessor for the match.
This matchup between Nigeria and Egypt unites two of the continent's most accomplished teams, both of which hold a storied history in AFCON.
Nigeria, a three-time champion, and Egypt, the record title holder with seven victories, both fell short of competing in the final after suffering defeats in their respective semi-finals.
The third-place playoff offers each nation an opportunity to conclude the tournament positively, with national pride, rankings, and momentum for future competitions on the line, ensuring that this will be a competitive encounter for both squads.
