Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) in Zaria has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Huawei Technologies Nigeria Ltd to improve its ICT infrastructure and roll out the Huawei Smart Campus initiative.
The agreement was formalized by Prof. Adamu Ahmed, the Vice-Chancellor of ABU, and Mr. Mars Zhangmi, the Director of Enterprise Delivery Service at Huawei Technologies Nigeria Ltd.
During the signing event held in Zaria, Prof. Ahmed emphasized that this collaboration seeks to modernize the university's aging network infrastructure, pointing out that many of the current systems have become obsolete and need replacement to ensure uninterrupted IT operations.
He remarked that the planned upgrades would facilitate blended learning opportunities, allowing students to interact with their professors remotely. Additionally, the initiative is expected to enable seamless connections for graduates and international instructors from countries like the United States and the United Kingdom.
The Vice-Chancellor also mentioned that ABU's Distance Learning Centre, one of the largest in Nigeria, would be expanded to serve a larger number of students, especially those who could not gain admission through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
He noted that annually, more than three million candidates apply for admission, but only about 30% are successful, a challenge that the enhanced ICT capacity aims to address.
Mr. Zhangmi commented that the project aligns with the mutual goal of both ABU and Huawei to foster talent development and establish advanced digital infrastructure to support research and innovation.
In a presentation, Esther Anigbo, a Senior Account Manager at Huawei, shared that the Smart Campus Solution, featuring the iMaster NCE platform, would allow centralized management of devices across all campuses and improve disaster recovery and network architecture.
