The High Court of Akwa Ibom State in Uyo has annulled the bail previously granted to a defendant implicated in the alleged rape of a 13-year-old boy. The ruling was pronounced on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, in Suit No. HU/41/2025 by Justice Okon Okon, prompted by the withdrawal of the defense attorney, Barr. Ifayi Ejika, who cited the defendant's inconsistent court appearances as his reason for resigning from the case.
The defendant in question, Mr. David Udoh James, is among seven individuals facing trial for the alleged sexual assault of a Junior Secondary School student from Etoi community in Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
The other accused individuals include Okwudili Levi Okeke, Idara Itam Daniel, Daniel Jacob Edet, Udofia Edem Udosen, David Bassey Bassey, and Nsikak Emmanuel Ben.
In addition to canceling the bail, the court directed the surety to present the defendant for a hearing on March 10, 2026, when the case is set to be deliberated again.
The court mandated that the surety must attend alongside the defendant on the specified date, warning that failing to produce the accused would lead to legal repercussions.
The court proceedings drew significant attention from journalists, as the case remains a focal point of public interest throughout Akwa Ibom State.
The case has attracted considerable attention following allegations that the minor endured prolonged sexual abuse over several years, starting from his primary school period.
Earlier reports indicated that the victim was initially enticed by a night security guard from QIC School, Etoi, and later introduced to several adult males who allegedly participated in the ongoing abuse.
It was reported that the suspects used threats to silence the victim and prevent him from revealing the incidents.
The situation came to the forefront after the boy's health deteriorated, leading his parents to seek explanations regarding his condition.
Medical assessments were subsequently conducted as part of the investigative process.
The mother of the victim previously appealed for support, mentioning financial obstacles that had hindered the family from pursuing the case effectively.
Community leaders have urged the state government to ensure justice for the young victim and to enhance systems for child protection.
After police intervention, the individuals accused were detained and brought to court.
With the bail now revoked and directives issued to the surety, the court is set to resume discussions on March 10, 2026, as efforts continue to ensure compliance with its orders and the prosecution of the case.
