Lawrence Nwankwo, a Catholic priest and Chancellor of the Catholic Diocese of Ekwulobia, has shared his story of survival following a terrifying 44-minute encounter with gunmen during an assault in Ekwulobia, Anambra State.
Reflecting on the incident, Rev. Fr. Nwankwo stated that the attack took place on July 9, 2025, between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 8:14 a.m., as he was making his way from Ekwulobia to Awka, the state capital.
He detailed how armed men forced him out of his car at the Ekwulobia roundabout, demanded the keys to the vehicle, and subsequently locked him in the trunk as they attempted to escape with it.
Amid continued gunfire, he remained confined in the trunk, fearing for his life until law enforcement eventually arrived and confronted the attackers.
Fr. Nwankwo reported suffering only a minor injury during the ordeal, while his car sustained multiple bullet strikes. He characterized his survival as a manifestation of divine intervention.
After the event, a Thanksgiving Mass was conducted in his honor, led by Peter Ebere Okpaleke, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Ekwulobia, during which the priest voiced his gratitude for his life and acknowledged the efforts of the security forces that rescued him.
He emphasized that this harrowing experience has fortified his faith and called upon Nigerians to persist in praying for peace and safety throughout the nation.
