Kunle Afolayan has shared his enthusiasm following the remarkable achievement of Anikulapo Season 2, which reached the top position on Netflix Nigeria within just a day of its release.

The successful debut was highlighted during Afolayan's interview on ARISE News this past Sunday, where he addressed inquiries about Netflix's renewed enthusiasm for the franchise and the performance of the new season after it premiered on Friday.

Reflecting on the timing of the launch, Afolayan remarked, "It’s really exciting to have released this at the beginning of the year, towards the end of January, as December tends to be quite busy. During that month, people were often occupied trying to make ends meet, and their attention might have been spread thin. But January is comparatively quieter. I’m thrilled because this feels like a dream come true."

He further elaborated that Anikulapo was originally intended to be a series before Netflix suggested starting with a feature film.

He explained, "The Anikulapo project initially was meant to be a series. However, after pitching it around, many thought it was an ambitious project. When Netflix showed interest, they expressed concerns about whether I could handle a series given that my experience was primarily in film. They inquired if I could produce a film first, and if that did well, we could move forward with the series."

Afolayan stated that this strategy was successful, as the initial film gained significant attention worldwide.

He added, "So, we produced the film, and it became the most watched globally at one point. Following that success, Netflix asked if I still wanted to proceed with the series, which led to the creation of season one."

Regarding the progress of the project, he noted that production had moved ahead of the recently released season.

He mentioned, "Now we have completed filming for both season two and three back to back. Yes, there will definitely be a season three, and we have finished post-production on it. Netflix will determine the release schedule since they have other films and a strategy for what films debut when. But as of yesterday, it’s the top watched in Nigeria, a clear indication of audience acceptance after just 24 hours."

The swift response from Nigerian viewers underscores the increasing popularity of Anikulapo, solidifying its status among Nollywood productions gaining traction on global streaming platforms.
