The All Progressives Congress (APC) has addressed the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State, revealing that behind-the-scenes talks are in progress to mend the rift between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

On January 29, during an appearance on TVC News' 'Beyond the Headlines', APC National Secretary Senator Ajibola Basiru shared that high-level negotiations are actively taking place to restore order in Rivers. He pointed out that while the media focuses on court actions and political discussions, significant efforts to resolve the political crisis are being conducted discreetly.

Basiru addressed concerns regarding the APC's perceived inaction concerning Governor Fubara, who appears to have aligned himself with the APC amidst looming impeachment threats and various legal hurdles.

He emphasized that substantial political discussions seldom occur through public statements, with many critical resolutions being made away from the public eye. Basiru illustrated politicians as “nocturnal animals,” indicating that genuine negotiations often transpire quietly.

The National Secretary assured that the party is committed to achieving a peaceful settlement that ensures there are “no victors and no vanquished,” highlighting the necessity of reconciliation for stabilizing Rivers State.

Although Nyesom Wike is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, Basiru recognized him as an influential political figure and a robust ally of President Bola Tinubu. He confirmed ongoing dialogues with Wike, acknowledging the significance of Rivers State in actualizing the President’s agenda, thereby making Wike's cooperation crucial for achieving political harmony.

Basiru also noted that existing tensions between the party leadership and Wike have diminished following past public disagreements. He expressed that the focus has now shifted towards broader political aspirations in preparation for the 2027 elections.
