The Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has opted to uphold the party’s current national leadership, effectively ruling out any intentions to rezone critical positions.
This decision was made during a meeting that concluded shortly after 1:45 a.m. on Monday in Lagos.
Hope Uzodimma, the chairman of the forum and the Governor of Imo State, spoke to journalists following the meeting, indicating that the governors found no reason to change the party’s leadership framework while President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is in office.
Uzodimma further mentioned that the meeting assessed recent developments in Iran and considered their potential impact on Nigeria’s economy, particularly concerning global energy markets and supply chains.
The communiqué released at the end of the meeting, which Uzodimma signed, outlined discussions surrounding national advancement, the duties of state leadership, and the role of progressive governors in facilitating federal reforms that can lead to meaningful benefits for citizens.
The governors reiterated their dedication to fostering democratic stability, principled governance, and supporting the Renewed Hope Agenda spearheaded by the Tinubu administration.
They also reported that prior to their meeting, members had engaged with the President. The discussions included crucial topics such as security, economic reforms, social welfare, infrastructure enhancement, food systems, and reinforcing cooperative federalism.
The communiqué indicated that the forum welcomed the President’s recent visit to the United Kingdom, describing it as part of broader diplomatic efforts for security and development. They also acknowledged his commitment to sustaining international collaboration to address security concerns and advance development goals.
Moreover, the governors expressed gratitude for the President’s transparency, clarity of intent, and determination to strengthen the nation’s federation.
On various national matters, the forum conducted a comprehensive review of the political, economic, and security landscape, acknowledging that while reforms often pose challenges, they are essential for long-term stability and growth.
They stressed the importance of enhanced collaboration between federal and state authorities, particularly in critical sectors including agriculture, energy, transportation, healthcare, and education, while upholding state autonomy.
Concerning economic issues, the governors recognized the difficulties associated with ongoing reforms but emphasized that their ultimate success should reflect improvements in the living standards of the Nigerian populace.
The forum cautioned that the continuing conflict in the Gulf region could exacerbate inflation and elevate costs of production, urging for unified efforts to increase food production, support small enterprises, and broaden social intervention initiatives.
Security was highlighted as a key element in national development, with the governors advocating for sustained investments in intelligence, technology, border control, and community-based early warning mechanisms.
In relation to party affairs, the forum pledged allegiance to the APC and commended the orderly nature of its ward, local government, and state congresses across the nation, viewing these events as a testament to the growth of internal democracy and institutional maturing.
However, they cautioned against complacency, urging party leaders to remain focused on unity, discipline, and the efficiency of service delivery.
The forum concluded by calling on Nigerians to stay committed to the democratic process and to support initiatives aimed at cultivating a more secure, inclusive, and prosperous nation.
This meeting saw the attendance of 24 APC governors, while the deputy Governor of Kaduna State represented her boss.
