Art Teacher in Critical Condition After Stabbing Incident with Student

A 60-year-old art teacher is currently fighting for her life in a hospital in southern France after suffering multiple stab wounds inflicted by a 14-year- old student. This alarming incident occurred at La Guicharde middle school located in Sanary-sur-Mer, situated between the cities of Toulon and Marseille.

Authorities reported that the unnamed teacher was rushed to the hospital in critical condition following the attack. The suspected student assailant has also not been publicly identified and has been taken into custody, facing charges of attempted murder, as per statements from local police representatives.

According to a source involved in the investigation, the teacher sustained three or four stab wounds, with two inflicted to her abdomen and the others to her arm. There were also allegations that the student shouted threats at the teacher prior to the attack.

Édouard Geffray, a local official, stated he would be visiting the scene immediately and conveyed his profound shock regarding the violent occurrence.

This stabbing incident occurs amidst growing concerns in France due to a rise in knife attacks targeting educators in schools, many of which have been linked to potential acts of terrorism. In October 2023, a literature teacher was fatally stabbed at the Gambetta-Carnot school in Arras, northern France, a tragic event where three other staff members sustained injuries as well.

The attack was attributed to Mohammed Mogouchkov, a 20-year-old individual alleged to be affiliated with ISIS, who is currently awaiting trial in custody. Furthermore, three years prior, a teacher named Samuel Paty was murdered in Éragny, a suburb of Paris, by an Islamist attacker who was later killed by police shortly thereafter.

In September of the previous year, another violent incident occurred at a middle school in Benfeld, eastern France, where a 66-year-old music teacher was seriously injured in a knife attack. Additionally, in June, a supervisor at the Françoise Dolto middle school in Nogent, near Paris, was fatally stabbed by a student. French officials have consistently noted that schools are under stringent security surveillance amidst ongoing investigations into such violent episodes involving students and school staff.
