A single death and severe injuries to three individuals were reported following two separate road accidents in Katsina State on Sunday, along the Dayi–Malumfashi highway.

Upon investigation by a reporter from PREMIUM TIMES at the crash sites near Ketare junction and Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) Gora, a commercial vehicle was found crushed under a livestock trailer, and bags of agricultural products were scattered across the road from another nearby accident.

The accidents took place less than a kilometer apart in an area that local residents claim has significantly deteriorated in terms of road conditions.

Deadly Incident at Ketare Junction

The first of these collisions occurred shortly after 1 a.m. at Ketare junction in Gora. A heavy trailer carrying livestock, marked in blue and red with the words "SABO DA MAZA," was en route to Lagos when the incident happened. The truck driver disclosed that he swerved off the road to avoid a head-on collision with another vehicle that was overtaking him.

In the process, a cab-over vehicle branded "CARROZZERIA FERRARI" attempted to avoid the trailer but ended up crashing into it. Eyewitnesses confirmed that the driver of the smaller vehicle, who was a resident of Malumfashi, died instantly due to the severe impact which crumpled the cabin of his vehicle. Some of the livestock in the trailer reportedly also perished during the incident.

The truck drivers involved stated they awaited assistance from another truck to help remove the strayed livestock and spilled cargo caused by the collision.

Second Collision Near GDSS Gora

Several hours later, around 10:30 a.m., a second accident occurred less than 200 meters from GDSS Gora. Witnesses reported that a Honda Accord, with the registration number ABJ-563EG, swerved to avoid hitting a pothole and collided with an IVECO EuroTrakker truck transporting tiger nuts and dates towards Funtua.

This collision resulted in the truck's cargo spilling onto the roadway. Two occupants of the Honda Accord sustained significant injuries, with one reported to be waiting under a nearby tree for family members arriving from Jibia to take him for treatment, his arm seriously injured.

Response from FRSC

Agricultural produce spilled onto the highway near GDSS Gora due to the truck collision.

Shamsu Babajo, the spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Katsina State, confirmed that personnel were dispatched to the accident locations. He indicated that the agency was involved in clearing the wreckage and the agricultural products that had spilled onto the highway.

Locals and travelers interviewed by PREMIUM TIMES attributed the incidents, in part, to the poor state of the highway, particularly in the GDSS Gora section, where deep potholes prompt dangerous swerving maneuvers into oncoming traffic. A visit by a PREMIUM TIMES reporter revealed many large potholes in the vicinity where the second accident transpired.
