Barcelona demonstrated an impressive second half as they overpowered Newcastle United with a score of 7-2 in the concluding leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 matchup.
The Catalans progressed with an aggregate score of 8-3, marking their advancement to the quarter-finals for the third consecutive season.
In the first half, Barcelona managed to secure a late penalty that leveled the score, but it was in the second half that they truly excelled, showcasing exceptional attacking play, despite some defensive lapses. Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski each netted two goals, while Marc Bernal, Lamine Yamal, and Fermin Lopez contributed to the scoreline.
The teams exchanged four goals in a thrilling first 28 minutes, with Raphinha and Bernal putting Barcelona ahead twice; however, Anthony Elanga’s two goals kept Newcastle in contention until Yamal converted a penalty just before halftime, giving Barcelona a 3-2 lead at the interval.
The home side dominated the second half, scoring four more goals, including a double from Lewandowski, who has now become the third highest scorer in UEFA Champions League history with a total of 36 goals.
This monumental win, which saw them match their record for most goals in a Champions League knockout game, occurred on a significant night as Joan Laporta attended his first match as the elected president of Barcelona, just two days after winning the presidential election for the club.
Newcastle experienced a historic defeat, conceding seven goals in a European competition for the first time, thus exiting the tournament. Hansi Flick’s team will now face the winner of the round of 16 contest between Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur in the quarter-finals.
