Football's world governing body, FIFA, has given its approval for goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo to represent Nigeria in international competitions. The decision confirms Okonkwo's change of national team affiliation from England.

The official confirmation, noted on FIFA's records as of April 6, means the Wrexham AFC first-choice goalkeeper is now available for selection by the Nigerian senior men's national team, often referred to as the Super Eagles, and their coaching staff.

Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo, now cleared to play for Nigeria.

Okonkwo has a history with English youth teams, having accumulated 10 caps across various age groups. His prior international experience includes five appearances for England's U-16 and U-17 sides, followed by another five caps for the U-19 team between 2016 and 2019.

Nigeria had been keen on securing the services of the Arsenal Academy product due to his notable performances for Wrexham, the club famously co-owned by Hollywood actors.

The 24-year-old goalkeeper has been instrumental in Wrexham's recent success, contributing to their progression through the leagues from the National League to the Championship. This season, he has been recognized among the top 10 goalkeepers for clean sheets, boasting a 68% save rate and accumulating 40 clean sheets over his three seasons with the club.

Born in London, Okonkwo is expected to contend for a starting position in the Nigerian squad against established goalkeepers such as Stanley Nwabali, Maduka Okoye of Udinese Calcio, and Francis Uzoho, who plays in Cyprus.
