Bayelsa State emerged as the unexpected leader of the medal standings at the first Niger Delta Games held in Uyo, narrowly defeating Delta State by a single gold medal on the final day of competition.
The state collected 46 gold, 29 silver, and 15 bronze medals, bringing their medal count to 86. As they prepare for the upcoming second edition in Benin, Edo State, several athletes are expressing their optimism about their capacity to maintain this leading position.
In interviews conducted at their training camp in Yenagoa, the state capital, athletes shared their determination to excel in the Games scheduled for February 20-27.
Wrestler Emmanuel Okike emphasized that Team Bayelsa's primary objective is to remain the top medalist at the Niger Delta Games. He attributed this confidence to their extensive preparation, especially in their wrestling drills.
"I am delighted to participate in the Niger Delta Games; we have performed exceptionally in all previous competitions, allowing me to assert that Bayelsa's focus has shifted from mere participation to winning events," Okike stated, as he recuperated after a match with a teammate.
Another athlete, Ebiere Frank, who competes in the 61kg freestyle wrestling category, voiced that Team Bayelsa is aiming for a strong performance in wrestling during the event. He noted that the Games serve as a critical preparatory event for subsequent competitions later this year.
Ebiere expressed appreciation for the visionary efforts of the Games' founder, Dunamis-Icon Limited, along with the leadership of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), recognizing their collaborative role in creating opportunities for young athletes in the region.
Gonibo Jessica, a basketball player, firmly stated that Team Bayelsa intends to secure the gold medal in basketball, highlighting that the competition has provided a vital platform for youth to shine in both national and international sporting arenas.
Praising the initiative of the Games, she encouraged the Commission to persist in their sponsorship, which significantly contributes to the grassroots development of sports.
As specified in the competition regulations, Bayelsa State will participate with a mix of male and female athletes across all 16 sports disciplines.
