Cryptocurrency exchange Binance has successfully utilized corporate reserves to replenish 90 percent of the $6.3 billion stolen during a massive security breach, the company announced on Saturday. The incident ranks as one of the largest cyberattacks in the history of digital asset trading.
"Our commitment remains the same: Binance will fully cover the financial impact of the funds stolen in this incident," the company stated via a post on the social media platform X.
Operating as the world's largest crypto exchange by daily trading volume, Binance explained that the remaining 10 percent of missing tokens consist of assets that are less liquid. Consequently, acquiring these specific tokens in the necessary quantities may require additional time. Overall, the platform has earmarked upwards of $6.34 billion in internal capital to completely absorb the losses stemming from the breach.
How did the cyberattack unfold?
Initially reporting on the incident on Friday, Binance described the breach as a sophisticated and complex operation involving multiple vectors of compromise. Security investigators examining the intrusion have pointed toward hackers linked to North Korea as the primary actors behind the exploit.
In response to the security compromise, the platform immediately halted user withdrawals to safeguard remaining assets. However, in subsequent updates, management confirmed that withdrawal services are on schedule to be fully restored by Sunday.
The massive security breach reverberated across financial markets, triggering a downward trend in the prices of most major cryptocurrencies as traders reacted to the news. The event also reignited broader anxieties among technology observers regarding the growing sophistication of Artificial Intelligence models and their potential to undermine traditional cryptography and IT security protocols.
What is the official response to the breach?
Governments and law enforcement agencies have quickly mobilized in the wake of the multi-billion-dollar exploit. US President Donald Trump stated on Friday that the United States government is actively reviewing the incident. Concurrently, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed it is collaborating closely with public and private stakeholders to assess the full extent of the activity and stands prepared to lead a formal investigation.
