British Typhoons Deployed as Russia Unleashes 10-Hour Barrage on Ukraine, Proximity to NATO Concerns Raised

British Eurofighter Typhoon jets were activated by NATO as Russia launched an extensive missile and drone offensive against Ukraine, an assault that persisted for over ten hours and extended close to the borders of the alliance.

Officials reported that the overnight offensive involved more than 47 missiles and 619 drones. Some of these aerial threats were allegedly detected within the airspace of neighbouring Romania.

Following the attack, fragments of drones were discovered in Galati, a southeastern Romanian city. Authorities indicated this was the first instance of property damage occurring on NATO territory as a direct result of such incidents.

The Romanian Ministry of Defence issued a strong condemnation, stating that these actions by the Russian Federation constitute a new threat to security and stability in the Black Sea region. The ministry highlighted Russia's disregard for international law and the risks posed not only to Romanian citizens but also to the collective security of NATO.

In response to the escalating situation, two UK air-policing Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft stationed in Romania were deployed to monitor the events. Residents in the vicinity of Tulcea county were advised to seek secure shelter.

Within Ukraine, the city of Dnipro in the southeast was significantly impacted, with residential areas targeted during the sustained bombardment. Official reports indicated that at least seven individuals lost their lives, with five fatalities in Dnipro and two in Chernihiv. More than 30 people sustained injuries, including a child.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the casualty figures, noting that eleven people were hospitalised in Dnipro following the Russian attack on the city. He also mentioned that rescue operations were ongoing at the site of a strike on a residential building, with concerns that people might still be trapped.

President Zelensky reiterated that Russian forces had attacked Dnipro and other Ukrainian cities and communities for most of the night. He appealed for immediate international assistance to bolster Ukraine's air defence capabilities.

Regional authorities in Chernihiv reported two fatalities and seven injuries from separate strikes. Attacks were also noted in the cities of Odesa and Kharkiv. This intensification of hostilities underscores the rising tensions along NATO's eastern frontier, where repeated incursions by Russian drones into alliance airspace have heightened concerns regarding regional security and the potential for broader conflict.
